If you have looked closely, you have probably noticed that both Missy and I often are sporting kinesiology tape on one or more areas of our body. I started using tape in January after I was “professionally” taped at a race expo and noticed a definitely improvement in my foot pain. I knew very little about taping at that point and literally watched YouTube videos of people taping my injury to find out how to tape it. After trying a few different methods, I found one that I feel works best for my issue. While I don’t tape every day anymore, I try to tape every time I am going to be running, jumping or lifting particularly heavy weight (so, in other words, I only tape most days now…).
If you have never used tape, you may be wondering why you would want to tape or what the benefits are. There are several reasons to use kinesiology tape including pain relief, reduced swelling, preventing spasms or cramping and structural support for weak or injured body parts (my reason!). For my particular injury, the tape provides (desperately needed) additional arch support to my weakened foot. So does it actually help? The few times I forget to tape I have had noticeably more pain and soreness post-run. I am a believer. Missy regularly gets really “fancy” tape jobs at her chiro and I know she feels a big difference as well.

However, I am at a point where I am only taping for workouts. Many injuries do best when the tape stays on for days at a time, so this (in most cases) is actually a good feature for most!
