My husband and I LOVE Mexican food. When I was young, I had close friends that were basically a second family to me. I was at their house all of the time and got to enjoy homemade Mexican food. I can still remember the home made tacos- the best tacos EVER. Taco night in my house looks a tad bit different but we all love it.
I tend to be that mama that does not like to buy processed foods (if you could not gather that by now) so I was very excited to find Skinny Taste’s taco seasoning in this recipe. I have tried other homemade taco seasoning recipes on pinterest but they were pretty spicy. Spicy is fine for myself and my husband but my kids will not eat the taco meat if it is too spicy. Here is what you need to make your own taco seasoning.
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp cumin
- 1 tsp kosher salt, or to taste
- 1 tsp chili powder
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1/2 tsp oregano
- 1 lb ground turkey
- taco seasoning (I mix the above recipe in a small bowl)
- 1/2 small onion, minced
- 1/4 cup bell pepper, minced
- 4 oz tomato sauce
- 1/4 cup water
- taco fixings
Brown your ground turkey in a heated pan with cooking oil. Add the onion and bell pepper while you brown the meat. I tend to use orange or yellow bell pepper. It is easier to hide in the meat than green peppers. If you have picky eaters, hiding the pepper will come in handy. Drain any fat and then add the rest of the ingredients aside from your fixings. Cook on low for 15-20 minutes. Add the meat to your choice or tortillas. My husband and I prefer corn while my kids like the flour tortillas. They have recently gotten into the hard shell tacos as they are similar to chips. When it comes to taco fixings, my kids only like cheese and lettuce for now. My husband and I like to add black beans, cheese, salsa and cilantro. If I have plain greek yogurt, we will use that in place of sour cream. Sometimes I will even spice up the yogurt with some seasoning or salsa. So good!
